Davis Thompson birdied five of the first six holes during the final round of the John Deere Classic on Sunday on his way to his first PGA Tour victory.

In his 63rd outing on the PGA Tour, the former Lee-Scott Academy standout carded a final-round 7-under 64 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Illinois, to finish the tournament at 256 and set the event scoring record at 28-under par.

Thompson won by four shots over Michael Thorbjornsen, C.T. Pan and amateur Luke Clanton.

For winning the tournament, Thompson earned a $1.44 million prize, picked up 500 FedEx Cup points to move solidly into the Tour Championship playoffs and received a spot in the Open Championship. He’ll make his first appearance in the major championship on July 18 at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland.

The 25-year-old got into position to win the John Deere Classic on Saturday, when he equaled his best PGA Tour round with a 9-under 62.

Thompson won after finishing as the runner-up at the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week. He also had been the runner-up at the Myrtle Beach Classic on May 12.

While at Lee-Scott Academy in Auburn, Thompson helped the Warriors win six AISA boys’ golf championships and was the state-tournament medalist in 2013 and 2015. He was an honorable-mention selection on the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s AISA All-State boys’ basketball team for the 2015-16 season, which ended with Lee-Scott as the AISA Class AAA champion.

At Georgia, Thompson was a PING and Golf Coaches Association of America All-American in 2020 and the SEC Player of the Year in 2021.
