NCTE Proposes Mandatory TET for Secondary Education at National Conference

NEW DELHI: The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has put forth novel regulations aimed at refining teacher recruitment practices. Among these propositions is the mandatory inclusion of the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) at the Secondary Level (Class 9 to 12). This recommendation emerged from comprehensive discussions held during a National Conference on TET convened by the NCTE, underscoring the importance and urgency of this initiative.
The NCTE, in collaboration with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), convened a pivotal 1-Day National Conference on Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) to explore enhancements aligned with the transformative aspirations of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP).
The inaugural session, graced by Ms. Kesang Y. Sherpa IRS, Member Secretary NCTE, set the stage for deliberations on TET’s potential expansion to the secondary level (Class 9 to Class 12). Ms. Sherpa underscored NEP 2020‘s advocacy for comprehensive educational reforms, including the integration of TET across various academic strata.

Mrs Nidhi Chhibber IAS, Chairperson CBSE, accentuated the pivotal role of TET in gauging teacher effectiveness and ensuring pedagogical excellence. With CBSE’s extensive experience in conducting TET examinations, Mrs Chhibber affirmed the board’s commitment to collaborating with NCTE to streamline TET implementation strategies.
Mr Vikram Sahay IRS, Principal Commissioner, Income Tax, emphasized the necessity of standardizing eligibility criteria to address the dynamic challenges encountered at different educational levels. His insights highlighted the imperative of maintaining uniform standards to uphold the quality of education delivery.
Prof. Yogesh Singh, Chairperson NCTE, echoed NEP 2020’s holistic vision, stressing the importance of nurturing students’ holistic development alongside academic proficiency. Prof. Singh advocated for an educational paradigm shift that prioritizes character development and values integration in curriculum frameworks.
Mr Abhimanyu Yadav, Convener TET from NCTE, provided a comprehensive overview of TET’s evolution and its pivotal role in enhancing educator quality nationwide. His detailed presentation delved into the examination process, eligibility criteria, and the imperative of recruiting highly qualified teaching professionals.
During the panel discussion, Prof. H.C.S. Rathore and Prof. R.C. Patel, along with representatives from various states and union territories, shared valuable insights and best practices on TET implementation and preparation strategies. Their discussions provided a platform for stakeholders to exchange ideas and experiences, fostering collaborative efforts towards improving teacher quality and educational outcomes.
In the concluding session, the Convener TET extended heartfelt gratitude to all participants for their invaluable contributions towards enriching the discourse on teacher eligibility and quality enhancement.
