Sydney Swans not ‘overly concerned’ over Tom McCartin future

John Longmire insists the Swans hold no major concerns over Tom McCartin’s wellbeing or future in the game after the Sydney defender was ruled out for a second week with concussion-related symptoms.

Longmire confirmed McCartin will miss Friday night’s clash with Carlton at the SCG, meaning the Swans will have to find a way to handle the Blues’ twin towers Charlie Curnow and Harry McKay without one of their best key defenders.

McCartin was flattened by a head-high bump from Callum Brown in Sydney’s round eight derby win, an incident which earned the Giants forward a three-match suspension.

Last week, Longmire said the 24-year-old was “feeling really good” and that he had not actually been “knocked out” as a result of Brown’s contact.

On Monday, he said McCartin would not play against Carlton, despite the fact he would be out of the AFL’s concussion protocols and available for selection by Friday, and was not sure whether he would be able to play the following week.

“He was good today, but he’ll be out of the team,” Longmire said. “Obviously, we’re looking after Tommy, and whilst he’s feeling fine today, we’ll give him another week.”

Pressed further on McCartin’s situation, Longmire said: “I just want to just want to make sure … it’s not about that. He’s feeling good today, but because we give him another week, doesn’t mean we’re overly concerned in that regard. We’ve just got to make sure we look after him, and he’s feeling fine, but we’ll take another week, and we’ll see how he is next week. We’re not going to rush into it. Hopefully, he’s on the right track.”

McCartin’s absence after the collision with Brown is the fourth time he has missed games in his AFL career due to head-related trauma.
