A suspect is behind bars after police said he tried to rob a credit union in Hoover.

Ian Everett D’Arpa, 46, of Birmingham, is charged with first-degree robbery and second-degree criminal mischief, according to Hoover police.

Hoover 911 at 4:47 p.m. Monday received a call of an attempted robbery at a credit union located on Inverness Center Parkway. Authorities did not identify the credit union.

Investigators say D’Arpa entered the building, indicated he was armed, and demanded a large sum of money before leaving the credit union. He did not get any money, said Capt. Keith Czeskleba.

The suspect’s description was broadcast to other officers and surrounding law enforcement agencies.

At 5:05 p.m., Hoover officers and Shelby County sheriff’s deputies responded to a restaurant in the 4600 block of U.S. 280 on a report of a man acting erratically. Czeskleba said he had shattered the front door of the business.

As officers and deputies arrived, they immediately recognized the man as matching the description of the bank robbery suspect and detained him.

An investigation began and the identity of the suspect was quickly confirmed as the person who had attempted to rob the credit union.

As of Wednesday afternoon, D’Arpa was awaiting transfer from the Hoover City Jail to the Shelby County Jail.
