Britain entered a recession in the final quarter of 2023 after contracting by 0.3 per cent in the final three months of the year, data from the Office for National Statistics shows.

A recession is defined as two consecutive quarters of negative growth. Today’s figure follows a fall of 0.1 per cent in the previous quarter, July to September.

The figures will come as a blow to the Prime Minister, who made “growing the economy” one of his five pledges for 2023.
