Channing Tatum & Salma Hayek: Worst movie couple of the year? Razzies say maybe

[

Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek: Steamy screen couple or spectacular flop? If you saw 2023′s “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” you probably have a strong opinion about this movie pairing. Well, the folks at the Golden Raspberry Awards do, too.

Tatum and Hayek received a 2024 Razzie nomination on Monday for Worst Screen Couple, competing against the likes of Chris Evans and Ana de Armas, the stars of “Ghosted,” and Pooh and Piglet of “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.”

The Razzies, of course, are satirical awards that poke fun at movies considered to be clunkers, stinkers and the absolute worst films of the year. The nominations tend to be phrased in a tongue-in-cheek way, but they do point to films that are, shall we say, less than shining examples of the genre.

Hayek also was among this year’s Razzie nominees for Worst Actress, competing against Jennifer Lopez, Megan Fox and more. But “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” escaped Razzie nods in other categories, such as Worst Actor, Worst Picture or Worst Director.

In a way, the Razzie’s acknowledgement of “Magic Mike’s Last Dance” was no surprise. Initial reviews were mixed for the movie, the third installment in the “Magic Mike” franchise, directed by Steven Soderbergh. However, “Last Dance” was included on several lists for the worst movies of 2023. (“It’s a let’s-put-on-a-show movie that feels like Chippendales by way of Disney,” Owen Gleiberman said in his year-end list for Variety.)

Tatum, an Alabama native, and Hayek have yet to respond to their Razzie nominations, but Tatum has been nominated before, earning a 2016 nod for Worst Actor for his role in “Jupiter Ascending.”

To be fair, Tatum’s also been nominated for some perfectly respectable trophies in the past, from organizations such as the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, Independent Spirit Awards, Sundance Film Festival, People’s Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards and MTV Movie & TV Awards.

Hayek has received two previous nominations for Razzies, both in the category of Worst Supporting Actress. In 2000, Hayek earned a Razzie nod for her roles in “Dogma” and ”Wild Wild West,” and in 2014 she was nominated for her work in “Grown Ups 2.″

Alabama is no stranger to the Razzies, by the way. In 2020, John Travolta was named Worst Actor by the 40th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards for two movies that were filmed in the state: “The Fanatic” and “Trading Paint.”

“The Fanatic” actually was nominated in four categories that year: Worst Picture, Worst Actor (John Travolta), Worst Director (Fred Durst) and Worst Screen Combo (John Travolta & Any Screenplay He Accepts).

Winners of the 2024 Razzies will be announced on March 9, according to the Razzies blog. Here’s the full list of nominations for the 44th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards:
