Claudia Winkleman signs off final BBC Radio 2 show after 16 years

Claudia Winkleman has said her final goodbye to BBC Radio 2 today after joining the station in 2008.

Ms Winkleman, 52, announced in December she was leaving her 10am to 1pm Saturday slot to spend more time with her children.

Romesh Ranganathan, who currently has a midnight to 1am weekend show on BBC Radio 2, will take over Ms Winkleman’s Saturday morning.

Ms Winkleman first moved to the slot in February 2021, replacing presenter Graham Norton, who moved to Virgin Radio.

“My biggest thanks are to you, the listeners. I have worked in telly for, I think, 24 years and I’m just being completely honest, I have never been more nervous than I was taking over for Graham,” she told her Saturday morning listeners.

“And you were warm, you were so welcoming, you were so lovely to me… So, I just want to say thank you so much. Do me one last favour, be lovely to Romesh and please look after my [traffic news reporter] Sally [Boazman]. This is from me, to you and it could only be this.”

She then played her final song, Oasis’ Wonderwall.

Ms Winkleman, who also hosts BBC Series The Traitors, had earlier in the day received messages from a number of celebrities wishing her well.

Former Oasis star Liam Gallagher said: “ I heard it’s your last Radio 2 to show today. Congratulations. Thanks for all support over the years and being a true faithful. See you soon.”

Mr Ranganathan also wished her all the very best of luck and wishes for her last show.

“I’m so excited and nervous to take over the show and every time I’ll be doing the show, I’ll be thinking I’m enjoying doing the show, but isn’t it a shame that Claudia isn’t doing the show?” he added.

“The point I’m trying to make is I love you, Claudia, all the best.”

Geordie duo Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly then joined Winkleman’s final Little Wins – a competition where viewers vote for their favourite guests who told the best stories about their successes.

The duo appeared on Ms Winkleman’s first ever Little Wins, representing a full 360 moment.

Mr Ranganathan will take over the Saturday morning show in April.
