NEW DELHI: The Delhi Directorate of Education (Schools), under the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi, on Saturday issued a notice stating the extension of the ongoing winter vacations in Delhi schools. However, hours later the Directorate issued another order withdrawing the winter vacation extension notice.
The vacation extension notice- No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2024/18, dated January 06, 2024 was released on the official website of the Delhi Directorate of Education (DDE).
The notice with the subject-line ‘Extension of Winter vacation for academic session 2023-2024’, stated “all the Govt., Govt. Aided and Unaided Recognized Private Schools of Delhi will remain closed till 10.01.2024 (Wednesday). Accordingly, all the Heads of Schools of Delhi are hereby directed to disseminate this information among all the stakeholders including the Teaching, Non- Teaching Staff, Students and Parents through SMC Members/ Mass SMS facility/ Phone Calls/ other suitable means of communication. This issues with the approval of Competent Authority.”
The extension had been issued following the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow alert due to dense fog, light rainfall and drop of temperature in the coming days. The notice read, “Delhi is experiencing extreme cold waves and Indian Meteorological Department has issued yellow alert due to dense fog, light rainfall and drop in temperature for next few days”.

The above notice notice however, was withdrawn hours later. The notice of withdrawal No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2024/19, stated that the previous order dated January 06, 2024, regarding extension of Winter vacation stands withdrawn with immediate effect. Adding to that the notice also stated that further orders in this regard might be issued in due course.

According to media reports, a Delhi government official has stated there was an error in the issuing of the order. According to the news agency PTI, the Delhi government official has been quoted saying “The oroder extending winter break was incorrectly issued. The order has been withdrawn immediately. Decision on the same will be taken tomorrow morning”.
Delhi for the past past week has been experiencing extreme cold waves and the IMD has issued yellow alert indicating a further drop in temperature in the next few days, in addition to dense fog and light rainfall.
The winter vacation for schools in Delhi was scheduled to end on Saturday, January 06. Classes are expected to resume Monday, i.e January 8, 2024.
