Fahmi says ‘prostitution den’ proposal by actor a mistake, mulls regulating podcast content

PETALING JAYA: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said his ministry may look into regulating podcast content in Malaysia following a controversial statement made by a local actor in a recent podcast episode.

“We don’t have plans yet but you have just given me an idea,” he said when met in Putrajaya today (Jan 9).

Fahmi said that he agreed with a statement made by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar who said that the proposal made by Datuk Rosyam Nor to introduce prostitution dens for foreigners in an episode on his podcast was “completely unacceptable”.

“The law doesn’t allow (for such activity). This is a mistake on Datuk Rosyam Nor’s part,” Fahmi said.

Rosyam claimed that his proposal may help to prevent crimes such as rapes, adding that it was just his personal opinion.

He made the statement during an episode discussing pornography addiction on the Suhan Channel, which was posted on YouTube on Jan 7.

Mohd Naim said the proposal contradicts both criminal and syariah law in Malaysia.

Rosyam has posted an apology on Instagram as his response to the backlash, saying that he did not expect the issue to go viral.
