A gardener accused of the murder of an elderly man and the attempted murder of the man’s wife has had his case mentioned in court for the first time.
Frederick Steel Sayers, 26, was charged on Thursday over the death of Nick Reeves and an alleged attack on Sue Reeves at their home in Burpengary East, north of Brisbane.
Detectives believed the incident unfolded that morning after Beachmere man Sayers, who was at the Reeves property and a neighbour’s to do gardening work, got into a dispute with the couple.
A witness reported the incident to police, prompting them to conduct a welfare check on the Reeves’ house in Bramston Court.
Officers found Mr Reeves’ body, while his wife was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition with significant head injuries. The 71-year-old remained in hospital on Friday.
At Pine Rivers Magistrates Court on Friday, the court heard the case would not be mentioned for at least another three months, while prosecutors prepared a brief of evidence.
“I would suggest it would take three months … we’ll probably have witness statements by then,” Sayers’ lawyer Brendan Whelan said.
Sayers did not appear for the brief hearing.
