APPLE is gearing up to release a free iPhone upgrade for millions later this year.
But for some unlucky users there won’t be any fancy new perks.
iOS 18 is expected to be jam-packed with fresh features powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
This could mean a much smarter and more powerful version of Siri similar to ChatGPT.
Apple expert Mark Gurman from Bloomberg recently wrote in his newsletter that iOS 18 is “seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history”.
And we could get our first glimpse of the new iOS in a matter of weeks.
Apple is hosting its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) from June 10, which is when the company usually talks big on software.
In recent years, iOS updates have then been released sometime in September or October.
However, some iPhone handsets won’t be compatible with the new version of iOS.
As is routine with smartphones, older models lose support.

This is usually because the aged tech within them aren’t powerful enough to handle the new features.
Apple hasn’t confirmed any details about iOS 18 just yet or which models will be exempt.
But here’s a list of models that are expected to be supported.
If yours isn’t on the list, then you may miss out on iOS 18:

- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro

The list may not come as a complete surprise though, as it’s the same models that were compatible with the current version, iOS 17.
However, it could spell the end of support for three iPad models – which use their own version of iOS called iPadOS – according to 9to5Mac.

We’ll have to wait until June for official word from Apple.
iOS 18 rumours
AI is the big talking point at the moment so it’s no wonder Apple is rumoured to be working on its own for the next iPhone update.
Generative AI technology “should improve how both Siri and the Messages app can field questions and auto-complete sentences,” according to Bloomberg’s Gurman, who has a strong track history with Apple leaks.
Apple has also reportedly explored generative AI features for other apps, including Apple Music, Pages, Keynote, and Xcode.
In Apple Music, AI could be used to create “auto-generated playlists”, according to the report.
There’s also talk of new accessibility features, according to MacRumors, including adaptive voice shortcuts that can be sorted into categories as well as custom font sizes for a wider variety of apps.
These apps may include Apple’s native Calendar, Finder, Mail, Messages, Notes, Books, News, Stocks, Tips and Weather.
