Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four’: Everything We Know About The 2025 MCU Revival

[

Finally, the Fantastic Four are where they belong: at the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Forget all those other FF movies (… not difficult!) because this cast reveal is all that matters now. We have a new Fantastic Four and they’re spectacular.

But with any cast reveal comes more and more questions! When will Fantastic Four start filming? Who will play Dr. Doom in The Fantastic Four? Is the movie really going to have H.E.R.B.I.E. in it? Oh — and who is responsible for that gorgeous FF Valentine’s Day card that Marvel sent out to their fans?

Below you’ll find answers to all those questions and more. Okay, well, you’ll find all the information that we have right now. The new Fantastic Four movie hasn’t started filming yet, so details are scarce — but this right here is everything we know.

When will Fantastic Four premiere in theaters? What is the Fantastic Four release date?

Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four is expected to open in theaters on July 25, 2025.

Who is in the Fantastic Four cast?

The cast includes Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us) as Mr. Fantastic; Vanessa Kirby (Mission: Impossible) as Invisible Woman; Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) as Human Torch; and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (The Bear) as the Thing. The Valentine’s Day card also includes the Four’s robot H.E.R.B.I.E., confirming that the li’l guy will be in the new movie. As for who will voice H.E.R.B.I.E., that’s TBA.

As for the film’s villain, that’s yet to be announced. It could be Doctor Doom! It could be Silver Surfer and Galactus! It could be Mole Man, Diablo, Wizard — the FF have a deep bench to pull from, but we don’t know which one(s) are in the film.

And for those of you wondering, “Wait — didn’t John Krasinski already play Mr. Fantastic in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?” — the answer is, “Yes.” So, that was a Reed Richards from an alternate reality. In the reality of Marvel Studios, at least the reality of this Fantastic Four movie, Reed is Pedro Pascal. It’s like how Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield were all Spider-Man in Spider-Man: No Way Home. They look nothing alike but they’re the same person from different realities. Don’t question it and keep moving!

Who is writing and directing Fantastic Four?

Fantastic Four comes from director Matt Shakman, the director of Marvel’s retro-ish sitcom/meditation on the nature of grief WandaVision. When you see the promotional art that’s been released for Fantastic Four, it makes sense, doesn’t it? And don’t forget: there were lots of possible FF Easter eggs in WandaVision!

Just… okay, so, maybe those didn’t pan out. Maybe those Easter eggs were a reach. Or maybe they weren’t and in 2025, you’ll all be looking at Decider as the first site to figure out the connection between the Fantastic Four and S.W.O.R.D.!

Anyway — the film was originally supposed to be directed by Jon Watts, the helmer of Marvel/Sony’s most recent Spider-Man trilogy. Watts stepped away from FF and Shakman stepped into the role.

As for the screenplay, buzzy newcomers Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer were brought on board to write the initial draft of the film. A later draft was completed by frequent James Cameron collaborator Josh Friedman, the writer behind TNT’s Snowpiercer and Apple TV+’s Foundation.

Where will Fantastic Four be filmed?

The Fantastic Four isn’t expected to go in front of cameras until August 2024. When it does, it will film at Pinewood Studios in London, which has been the home of many past Marvel movies.

Is there a Fantastic Four trailer?

There is not, as the movie has not yet started filming.

What is Fantastic Four about?

All we have to go on is one illustration from concept artist Wesley Burt — but that one illustration says a lot!

The illustration itself has a retro-futurist, 1960s feel, which lines up with the comic’s tone, and the casual, at-home feel matches the quartet’s status as the first family of the Marvel Universe. So, does that mean that the movie will be set in the 1960s? And how would that fit in with the rest of the MCU, which is very much not in the 1960s? Those are questions to ponder for… probably a while, because we’re likely a ways away from having any footage or even a synopsis for the new Fantastic Four film.

How is Fantastic Four connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Is Fantastic Four a sequel to 2015’s Fantastic Four?

As far as we know, this is a brand new start for the Fantastic Four and it will stand completely apart from the previous FF films. Of course, considering how multiversal the MCU has been as of late, and all of the ’00s cameos expected to pop up in Deadpool vs. Wolverine, you really never know what’s going to happen with these movies. But for all intents and purposes, this is a new Fantastic Four set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel’s first family finally came home.
