Singer and actor Nick Jonas, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 13, recently shared his top three self-care strategies for managing his condition and maintaining his mental health. Speaking to CBS News, the 31-year-old artist emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to diabetes management, highlighting mental health as a crucial component.
Jonas explained that high glucose levels can directly impact one’s mood, leading to feelings of irritability and frustration. To combat this, he relies on a combination of healthy eating, using the Dexcom G7 to monitor his glucose levels in real-time, and giving himself grace to prevent burnout. He acknowledged that despite the best efforts to manage the disease, some days are tougher than others. During such times, he finds it essential to take 15 to 20 minutes to sit, breathe deeply, and de-escalate, which helps him avoid burnout.
A significant perspective shift has also been beneficial for Jonas. He shared that he used to get easily frustrated with challenging situations but now strives to view them from the perspective of doing the best he can. This change in mindset has been healthy and helpful for him, allowing him to focus on his family, especially since becoming a father.
He noted that being present with his child is a priority, and he works hard to avoid being distracted by diabetes-related frustrations. Jonas also emphasized the importance of sleep, a form of self-care he previously overlooked. He has noticed a direct correlation between better sleep and improved glucose levels.
Lastly, Jonas highlighted the value of physical activity for mental health. Despite his busy schedule filming in Dublin and touring with his brothers, he finds time for sports like golf and tennis. These activities help him focus on something singular, providing a mental break and reinforcing the idea that managing diabetes, much like mastering a sport, requires taking it one step at a time.
