Nottingham Forest owner storms pitch after Liverpool’s 99th-minute winner

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis stormed onto the pitch in the wake of Liverpool’s last-minute win at the City Ground.

Darwin Nunez left it until the 99th minute to score the only goal of the game, before carnage broke out after the final whistle, leading to Forest first-team coach Steven Reid being sent off.

And Marinakis came down from the stands and onto the pitch, before appearing to wait for referee Paul Tierney in the tunnel.

The late win means Liverpool extend their lead at the top of the Premier League, while Forest edge ever closer to the relegation zone.

Greek shipping mogul Marinakis, who also owns Olympiacos, was upset about the timing of the goal – only eight minutes added time had been slated – and about a Forest penalty shout which was not given late on.

He reportedly then pursued Tierney and his fellow officials down the tunnel, where there was an exchange en route to the referee’s room.

This is not the first time Marinakis has made the headlines after a Premier League game this season – after his club’s 5-0 defeat to Fulham, his accreditation for the game was found in a nearby bush having exited the ground mid-match.

After the game, Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo said: “I will not comment on the referee, don’t insist. Please don’t insist on that, it won’t be good. Let’s discuss the game… hopefully decisions in the future will be better.”

He also told Sky Sports he did not know whether the club would take up the incident with refereeing body PGMOL.

This result leaves Forest 17th in the Premier League and just three points above Luton Town, who have a game in hand.

They are also under the threat of potential Financial Fair Play sanctions over the coming months, having been charged with a breach of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) in January.

Everton, who were found guilty of a similar breach for the previous accounting period, were deducted six points as a result (reduced from 10), meaning Forest are still at serious risk of relegation.
