‘Queenie’ Trailer Sets Up Drama Series Ahead Of Season 1 Premiere

The first trailer for Queenie, the freshman series from Onyx Collective for Hulu, has been released (above) and it dives into the complicated life of a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in south London. The drama will be available to binge on June 7.

When viewers meet the titular Queenie Jenkins (newcomer Dionne Brown), she’s straddling two cultures and failing to fit into either neatly. Plus, she’s dealing with a messy breakup with her long-term boyfriend and is seeking comfort in all the wrong places. Eventually, she begins to realize she has to face the past head-on before she can rebuild.

Queenie also stars Bellah in the role of Queenie’s childhood friend Kyazike and Samuel Adewunmi plays Frank, Kyazike’s older cousin and Queenie’s intellectual match.

The series is based on the 2019 best-selling novel by Candice Carty-Williams, who created the series and executive produced it. Carty-Williams is emerging as one of the UK’s most sought after new scribes. Netflix last year boarded her BBC series Champion, which is billed as “a love letter to Black British music.”

The eight-episode series is produced by Further South Productions in association with Lionsgate TV and will stream exclusively on Hulu in the U.S., Channel 4 in the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland, Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other territories.

Queenie is executive produced by Carty-Williams, who also serves as showrunner. Non-writing executive producers are Further South’s Steve November and Sarah Conroy, with Lisa Walters as co-executive producer and series producer.
