JNU Student Faces ‘Sexual Harassment’ From Professor

As mentioned earlier, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) has alleged that a student of the renowned university was sexually harassed by one of her professors and was also threatened by him which reached a point where the student had to leave the campus. According to the student union, this is not the first student who has been harassed by the professor in question. According to an Indian Express report, the JNUSU’s statement read, “The professor in question harassed the survivor through constant messages and calls including lewd poems, requests for ‘personal’ meetings, etc. Upon her refusal to submit in front of the professor, she was threatened with failing his paper. The said professor then went on to harass other female students so as to know about the survivor’s whereabouts. The survivor was forced to leave campus.”

Victim Filed Complaint With JNU ICC No Action Taken

The JNUSU has also raised its voice against the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) of the University and has claimed that despite the filing of a sexual harassment complaint by the victim, no action was taken. The JNUSU said that after the woman filed a complaint on April 19, a complaint was also filed by a few of her batchmates on April 15 who also accused the professor of sexual and mental harassment to know the victim’s whereabouts. The JNUSU has also said that not only did the ICC remain inactive but they also did not issue any kind of restraining order against the teacher prohibiting him from taking classes so that the victim and other women students’ safety is ensured.

JNUSU Makes These Demands In Case

Now, the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU) has demanded that the proceedings of the complaints must be expedited and action against the professor including his suspension must be taken, The statement of the JNUSU as quoted in an Indian Express report, “The ICC has been known to shield those in positions of power. A couple of weeks ago, in (another) case of sexual harassment against a student… the ICC had shown similar attitude.”
