‘The Bachelor’ Season 28, Episode 5 Recap: Who Went Home? And Who Got A One-On-One Date?

[

It’s Valentine’s Day week, and ABC is blessing Bachelor Nation with two episodes of The Bachelor, two rose ceremonies, and a whole lot of romance.

On the heels of Season 28, Episode 4, which saw Joey Graziadei and his remaining women relocate to Malta, The Bachelor returned with Episode 5 on Tuesday, February 13 to wrap up the dramatic cocktail party cliffhanger and move the search for love to Spain.

After Joey says goodbye to two women, the group heads to Andalusia for two exciting one-on-one dates, a group date, and yet another emotional rose ceremony.

Wondering who got a one-on-one date? Who went home during Episode 5’s TWO rose ceremonies? And who has beef with Maria now?

Decider’s The Bachelor Season 28, Episode 5 recap has you covered.

Rose Ceremony #1 Recap: Did Maria Go Home On The Bachelor?

Episode 5 picked up right where we left off — with Maria crying and telling producers she wanted to hand over her rose, go home, and “just let them win.” As a reminder, after Joey sent Sydney packing post-two-on-one, Lea decided to honor her friend’s memory by starting beef with Maria over *checks notes* nothing. Despite the tears and confusion, Maria attended the rose ceremony stem-in-hand and Joey sent Allison and Edwina home. Following the goodbyes, he announced the group was headed to Andalusia, Spain. But would the Maria drama follow? Again? You bet!

Joey Graziadei and Kelsey Anderson‘s One-On-One Date Recap

The first one-on-one date in Spain went to Kelsey Anderson, who Joey picked up on a vespa in front of the rest of the girls, who coped with the letdown by downing sangria and housing olives. Relatable.

Kelsey A. was excited for the date because her grandma was from Spain, and she and Joey spent the day shopping, exploring, playing soccer with strangers, and having a picnic. At several points throughout the day each of them noted how natural their connection felt, but Kelsey admitted she was “tripping,” not falling in love. Then dinner came around, and the couple headed to a 13th century bath house where Kelsey shared a major part of her life story.

Kelsey explained that her mom and dad met in the military when they were both military police officers. She shared her mom was soldier of the year multiple times, but when Kelsey was born she got out of the army and “brought so much light” to her life. “Ten years ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and it metastasized on her bones,” Kelsey tearfully explained. “They gave her six months, and after that it was very aggressive, and after two months she passed away.”

Joey comforted Kelsey as she got emotional over the thought of her mom not being there to see her get engaged or married, but she told Joey she saw several signs that she was meant to be on this journey and that her mom would have approved. Joey was moved by Kelsey’s openness, gave her a rose, and by the end of the night she told cameras she went from tripping to falling in love.

Group Date Recap: One Sentence And A Lot Of Paint

For his Spain group date, Joey invited Lexi, Daisy, Jenn, Autumn, Maria, Katelyn, Madina, Lea, Jess, and Kelsey T. to meet an artist who challenged them to sum up their feelings for him in a single sentence and create a painting to express it. The women explained their artwork, but in the end, Jess won the extra time with Joey for her engagement ring painting, which proved she was here for the long haul. The two slipped into white swim suits, hopped on a blank human-sized canvas, covered each other in paint, and rolled around to create their first piece of art as a couple.

Later that night in Malga, Spain, the women met up with Joey again for drinks and deep conversation. Maria took the time to open up about her “different” family dynamic, and explained that her mom left when she was young after they got into a really bad car accident. “When I was one, a cement truck truck fell on her car,” Maria explained, telling Joey that as a baby, she was announced dead at scene and newspapers called her a miracle. “My mom broke almost every bone in her body” and “went into a depression” following the accident, which caused her to miss a portion of Maria’s childhood. “We’re still a work in progress,” Maria told Joey, but said her mom thought he was so cute and would love to meet him some day. Following the heart-to-heart, Joey gave Maria the rose, which made Lea so mad (for reasons unknown!) that she told cameras, “My heart is in my ass.” OK girl!

Joey Graziadei and Rachel Nance‘s One-On-One Date Recap

For his final date of the episode, Joey took Rachel Nance to Marbella to learn flamenco dancing. The two got lessons from a pro (Joey even dared to wear shorts and high heeled boots) before performing in front of a crow. Though they were nervous, they wound up building even more chemistry. Later at dinner, Rachel opened up about the “defining parts of her life,” including working as an ICU nurse, which she acknowledged can be difficult for a partner because of the long hours.

Joey acknowledged that her career was something he had to be aware and considerate of and offered her the rose, saying “I’m all in on the slow-burn…I appreciate you so much.” He told cameras he hopes their slow-burn will turn into “a full raging fire.”

Rose Ceremony Recap: Who Went Home During The Bachelor Season 28, Episode 5?

Before the group gathered for the second rose ceremony of the episode, someone naturally had to get mad at Maria during the cocktail party. This time around, Lea sat back and let Jess pick a fight with Maria for showing “disrespect” by stealing Joey from someone when she already had a rose. The two exchanged words, Jess called Maria “a bitch,” and more tears were shed. Once again, the feud was hidden from Joey, and during the rose ceremony he sent Madina and Autumn home, which means Episode 5 said goodbye to Madina, Autumn, Allison and Edwina.

Next week, the group is traveling again. They’re backing their bags, grabbing their passports, and heading to Montreal, so we’ll see you back here for another Monday night recap.
