Ana Navarro‘s got jokes. On this morning’s episode of The View, the co-host cheekily compared Donald Trump‘s ongoing criminal trial to O.J. Simpson‘s murder case, quipping, “If the condom don’t fit, then you must acquit.”
Trump is currently on trial for allegedly using his campaign funds to pay off adult film star Stormy Daniels, whose testimony brought up graphic details of their alleged affair, including the allegation that the former president did not wear a condom.
While Joy Behar and Sara Haines were doubtful that Trump would see jail time, Sunny Hostin — who was present in the courtroom this week — argued her belief that Trump would be convicted and would spend some time behind bars.
“He will be convicted of some of them if not all of them. I do believe that he will appeal the conviction,” she said. “I think it will matter that he was convicted. And I think he won’t serve four years in prison but I can’t imagine that he gets off with no jail time. I think that would send the wrong message.”
Ana Navarro, on the other hand, didn’t want to get her hopes up.
“I don’t want to put all my eggs in the basket. I guess I don’t want to get my hopes up because I’ve gotten my hopes up when it comes to Trump so many times,” she explained. “I thought for sure that when people listened to the Access Hollywood tape they would turn on him and they didn’t.”
While Navarro thought Trump was “as guilty as can be,” she also admitted that she was “biased.”
“In my eyes, this has been absolutely proven,” she said. “I think part of the stupidity of Trump and his lawyers is denying this affair, which I think anybody and everybody with a brain knows happened and that’s why they’re having to go into such salacious detail.”
She added, “All that being said, I’m not holding my breath that he gets convicted.”
Trump wouldn’t be the only guilty-seeming defendant to get out of prison time, Navarro pointed out.
“There’s a lot of people who we all thought were guilty that didn’t end up going to jail, right?” she said. “A lot of people felt that way about O.J. Simpson, who was also a powerful rich celebrity. So I guess this time it’s: if the condom don’t fit, then you must acquit.”
Navarro’s remark was a clear callback to the infamous line, “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit,” which ultimately helped Simpson in his murder trial when the glove found at the crime scene appeared not to fit his hand.
“Good one, Ana! The condom don’t fit,” Behar said, before jokingly attempting to segue into the next topic. “How does one make a transition to Mother’s Day?”
