Xavier’s School Gets Repurposed In New Uncanny X-Men Series

[

Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters is getting a dramatic makeover in the upcoming X-Men: From the Ashes era. The new era for mutants kicks off with three new series, including a new Uncanny X-Men. The Uncanny series comes from writers Gail Simone and David Marquez. Marvel recently revealed some new information on what readers can expect from the new venture. This includes a look at what has happened to the abandoned former headquarters of the X-Men, which now serves as a prison.

This week, Marvel unveiled the cover for the debut issue of Uncanny X-Men and some snippets of information. What may come as a shock to many fans is that Xavier’s School is now serving as a prison — the Graymalkin Prison, to be more precise. This ties together some other information we already knew, like the peek at the mysterious Prisoner X. Still, seeing the School as a prison is a strange thing.

Of course, over the X-men’s long history, Xavier’s School has held a few different titles. Obviously, it debuted as Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, where Professor X trained the next generation of mutants. Then it became the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, which may have been Marvel’s attempt to lean away from the “young” aspect to tell more adult stories. Finally, it came to be known as the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning. Now, it is a prison that will likely hold captured mutants in a post-Orchis society.

A New Era Approaches

Alongside Simone and Marquez’s Uncanny X-Men, the From the Ashes era of X-Men is heralded by two other series. They are X-Men from Jed MacKay and Ryan Stegman and Exceptional X-Men from Eve Ewing and Carmen Carnero. Each follows a team of X-Men led by different heroes. The new series harkens back to when the X-Men were trying to find their place in the world and answer broader questions concerning their existence.

Uncanny X-Men #1 is on sale 08/07.
