With Infinity Ward creating Call of Duty (2003), Call of Duty 2 (2005), and Treyarch producing Call of Duty 3 (2006), the series initially concentrated on the World War II scenario.
The breakout game for the series, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (2007), established a modern setting and gave rise to the Modern Warfare sub-series.
A remastered version of Modern Warfare was published in 2016.
There were two more entries: Modern Warfare 3 (2011) and Modern Warfare 2 (2009).
Modern Warfare in 2019, Modern Warfare II in 2022, and Modern Warfare III in 2023 marked the return of the subseries.
Two other games that Infinity Ward has created are Ghosts (2013) and Infinite Warfare (2016), which are not part of the Modern Warfare subseries.

Activision launched the Call of Duty video game series and media property in 2003.
Initially, Infinity Ward produced the games, followed by Treyarch and Sledgehammer Games.
Several developers created a number of portable and spin-off games.
On November 10, 2023, the most recent game, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, was made available.

Summary of Call of Duty issues
Thousands of Call of Duty players continue to experience issues with the game.
The issues reported by players on social media and Downdetector include:
- Multiplayer, Warzone and Zombies server issues
- Rank, weapon levels and classes have been reset
Call of Duty outage continues
Players are still experiencing a wide range of issues with Call of Duty.
The game released a statement shortly after 3pm today, saying it is “working on a fix”.
However, no time frame was given for when the issues will be resolved.
Activision’s website still shows that Call of Duty’s servers are up and running, despite many players reporting issues with both MW3 and Warzone.
Call of Duty clamps down on cheats
Call of Duty banned 6,000 accounts this week following a spike in cheating reports.
“As part of ongoing security updates, a single telemetry system was taken offline for upgrades over the weekend,” the game said. “This action resulted in cheat developers claiming RICOCHET Anti-Cheat was offline. It was not.
“As a result of monitoring activity over the weekend and the purposeful reactivation of this upgraded system, #TeamRICOCHET was able to identify and ban over 6000 accounts for cheating and hacking from February 16 – February 20.
“Our team continues to work on security updates for issues across various modes in Call of Duty: Warzone and Modern Warfare III.”
