CelcomDigi launches new 5G prepaid plans starting from RM25 per month

CelcomDigi has introduced new 5G prepaid plans for customers.

Available from March 1, the plans come in two variations – Unlimited 5G Blue Edition and High-Speed 5G Yellow Edition.

Under the Blue Edition, customers can choose a plan with 15GB high-speed data at speeds of up to 100Mbps for RM25 monthly, or opt for more data with the 55GB high-speed data plan with speeds of up to 100Mbps for RM39 per month. Once the high-speed data is fully utilised, customers will be switched to unlimited 4G data at speeds of up to 1Mbps or 3Mbps respectively.

Both plans come with 3GB hotspot data with 100Mbps speed and unlimited calls to all networks.

For the Yellow Edition, customers can get 30GB data for RM25 per month or 75GB data for RM39 per month.

Both plans promise speeds of up to 100Mbps, 6GB hotspot data also at up to 100Mbps speeds and unlimited calls to all networks.

Chief consumer business officer Praveen Rajan said the company is serving over 13.5 million prepaid customers across a variety of plans in the country.

“All customers will have the option of choosing to move to the new plans or they can stay on what they have. The variety of plans will still be there.

“Effective from March 1, for all new activations, we will be promoting the new CelcomDigi Prepaid 5G plans,” he said during a press conference today (Feb 29).

Malaysia has achieved 80.2% 5G network coverage in populated areas as of Dec 31, 2023 according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. He also announced that the 5G adoption rate is at 29.9% as of Jan 31.

Praven said one of the main constraints for most users in the country to access 5G would be getting the right device. He added based on rough estimates, about one in five users have a 5G phone.

“The country needs to move and we need more people to (move) towards 5G as well,” he said.

Head of prepaid Vincent Lee said previously the company had launched its first 5G-ready plan with a starting price of RM48 monthly.

“Adoption was encouraging but limited to a smaller number of premium customers. With the new plans, where we have reduced the price by almost 50%, we’re optimistic that the pick-up rate should significantly increase and help drive the country’s penetration rate for 5G,” he said.

From March 1 till June 30, the company is also offering extra data and hotspot quota for customers who sign up or upgrade to the new prepaid plan. More information will be available on the CelcomDigi website.

Addressing customer complaints

Last month, Fahmi said the ministry will send information to CelcomDigi to resolve service disruption issues faced by customers due to the network integration and modernisation exercise.

He said that the complaints were coming from users on social media.

Praveen addressed the concerns, saying that the company is taking measures to notify customers about any efforts to optimise the network in their area.

“For a handful of customers who feel that they are not getting an experience that was as good as before, those are the cases that we are looking at proactively,” he said.

He also urged customers facing issues to file a report on their customer help page via a dedicated form, adding that “we will respond very quickly”.

The company has so far completed 35% of its network integration and modernisation target.
