Historic night at Grammys as Killer Mike arrested and Taylor Swift breaks record

The 2024 Grammy Awards came to a dramatic end last night, as Taylor Swift took home her fourth album of the year trophy and rap star Killer Mike was escorted out in handcuffs.

The 66th annual ceremony, hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, saw female musicians dominate in a number of major categories.

US singer Billie Eilish took home song of the year for her Barbie hit What Was I Made For?, and pop star Miley Cyrus landed record of the year for her viral summer sensation Flowers.

Here is everything you need to know about what happened at the historic ceremony.

Killer Mike was arrested for “misdemeanour battery” after winning three awards at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Racking up accolades for his music, the 48-year-old rap artist, real name Michael Render, was captured in footage from the Hollywood Reporter being handcuffed by police.

An LAPD spokesperson confirmed the rapper was in the process of being released on Sunday night.

The arrest came moments after the artist’s career highlight, talking backstage about how at 20 years old he “thought it was cool to be a drug dealer.”

He added: “At 40, I started to live with the regrets and the things I’ve done. At 45, I started to rap about it.

“At 48, I stand here as a man full of empathy and sympathy for the things I’ve done.”

The LAPD confirmed the man arrested was Killer Mike, adding he was “detained and handcuffed for a physical altercation that occurred at the 700 block of Chick Hearn Court.”

Killer Mike won Grammys for best rap album for Michael, and best rap song and best rap performance for SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS.

Taylor Swift made Grammy history as the first person to win album of the year four times.

US megastar Swift, 34, secured the top gong of the night with her 10th studio album, Midnights, shortly after announcing she would be releasing a new album titled The Tortured Poets Department, on 19 April.

A visibly shocked Swift previously won the award for album Fearless in 2009, again six years later for 1989, and most recently for Folklore in 2020.

Collecting the award from Celine Dion, who made her first public appearance in four years, Swift said: “Oh god, no. I don’t know man.”

She told the audience: “I would love to tell you that this is the best moment in my life, but I feel this happy when I finish a song or when I crack the code to a bridge that I love or when I’m shot listing a music video, or when I’m rehearsing with my dancers or my band or getting ready to go to Tokyo to play a show.”

Tracy Chapman performed her 1988 hit Fast Car for the first time live in nine years at the ceremony in LA last night.

Chapman played the hit song alongside country singer Luke Combs, after his version won the Country Music Association Awards song of the year – 35 years after her hit was originally released.

Their duet was met with a standing ovation from the likes of Oprah and Kasey Musgraves, and Trevor Noah hailed the 59-year-old as the “legendary Tracy Chapman,” adding, “Thank you so much for that! Thank you so much for that.”

SZA, who was nominated for nine awards, also performed a medley of her songs, and Dua Lipa performed her new song Training Season.

Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, U2, Travis Scott, Burna Boy and Billy Joel all performed their latest hits alongside this year’s surprise act, Joni Mitchell.

Kylie Minogue also enjoyed a moment on TikTok this summer for her hit Padam Padam, which saw her scoop up her second Grammy over 20 years after her first golden gramophone.

Miley Cyrus won best solo pop performance and record of the ear for her song Flowers, saying “I really hope this doesn’t change anything as my life was beautiful yesterday.”

Best new artist and best R&B album went to Victoria Monét, who said “I just wanna say to everyone who has a dream, I want you to look at this as an example,” on winning her first Grammys.

Best R&B song and best progressive R&B album went to SZA for her song Snooze and her album SOS.

Song of the year went to Billie Eilish for her Barbie soundtrack hit What Was I Made For?, and best folk album went to Joni Mitchell for her live performance album at Newport.
